I know what you mean about season two - I'm half-way through at the moment. It doesn't have the same depth, mainly - I think - because there's less attention paid to the victims. But I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

Have you heard of 'Borgen'? Produced by the same people as 'The Killing' (with many of the same actors). Very good (if politically far-fetched). The BBC is showing season one at the moment, so I think it's available to watch on iplayer (if you can watch that in Oz?).
Also, on the subject of TV - have you seen 'Band of Brothers'? Just watched it recently. I wanted to hate it (Spielberg, Hanks, etc.) but it's incredible. Nothing like the gung-ho jingoistic nonsense I was expecting. Just the opposite, in fact: serious, thoughtful, anti-war. Shame the follow-up 'The Pacific' is so inferior.
The second season's rather disappointing, though.
